Online Training and Assessments
Hardware/Software/Browser Requirements

For a list of system requirements for working in the new financial system, click here.

IMPORTANT NOTE

In order to participate in online training and assessments, it is critical that users

  • have the most current version of Flash Player installed

  • disable popup blockers

  • have Java installed

If these requirements are not followed, scoring on assessments will tally incorrectly. Please see below for detailed instructions about Flash Player, popup blockers, and Java.

Firefox is the recommended browswer for all online training and assessments.


SUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEMS AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS

  • Windows 98 SE, 2000, or XP and a 56k V.90 modem or better Internet connection

  • Macintosh OS X and a 56k V.90 modem or better Internet connection


SUPPORTED BROWSERS

For Windows 98 SE, 2000, XP

  • Mozilla Firefox 1.5 or higher (preferred browser)

  • Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher

  • Netscape 7.0, 7.1, 7.2

For Macintosh OS X, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 (PPC/Intel)

  • Mozilla Firefox 1.5 or higher (preferred browser)

  • Safari 1.2 or higher

  • Netscape 7.0, 7.1, 7.2


POPUP BLOCKERS

You will need to disable popup blockers in your browser. Some blockers may be turned off on Windows by right clicking an icon on the system tray, next to where the clock resides. The most recent version of Internet Explorer has a built-in popup blocker. To configure your browser to enable popups, see the directions below.

Firefox

  1. Go to Tools > Options.
  2. Click on the Content tab.
  3. Make sure the Block Popup Windows checkbox is not selected.

Internet Explorer

  1. Go to Tools > Popup Blocker. At this point you can either just turn the popup blocker off, or continue with the settings below.
  2. Select "Popup Blocker Settings."
  3. For Address of Web site to allow, type “https://*.umn.edu.”
  4. Click the <Add> button.
  5. Click the <Close> button.
  6. Close and restart Internet Explorer.

Netscape 7.1 or 7.2

  1. Select "Popup Windows."
  2. Either uncheck Block unrequested sites or continue with the steps below.
    • Click the <Allowed Sites> button.
    • Enter “vista.umn.edu” in the text field. Click <Add>.
    • Enter “vista2.umn.edu” in the text field. Click <Add>.
    • Enter “umconnect.umn.edu” in the text field. Click <Add>.
    • Enter “onestop.umn.edu” in the text field. Click <Add>.
    • Click <OK>.

Netscape 7.1 or 7.2

  1. Make sure the Block Popup Windows checkbox is not selected.


FLASH PLAYER

Adobe Flash Player 8 or higher is required. It is recommended, however, that you install the most current version of Flash Player, available from the Adobe Web site at www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/.


JAVA

Windows

  1. Download the Java plugin from http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp. This may take some time depending on the speed of your connection.
  2. Choose Save File and save the file to your desktop.
  3. Close your browser.
  4. Double-click the file you downloaded in step 2 above and run the installation program, choosing all the defaults.
  5. After you install Java, make sure that you have switched to the Sun Java Virtual Machine, as follows:
    • Open the Windows Control Panel by selecting Start > Settings > Control Panel. The Control Panel appears.
    • Locate and double-select Java Plug-in. The Java Plug-in Control Panel appears.
    • Select the Browser tab.
    • Under Settings, select the checkbox next to your browser.
    • Click <Apply> to save your settings.
    • Restart the browser.

Macintosh

If you are using Mac OS X, Java should already be pre-installed. Make sure the plugin is installed by following the steps below.

  1. Open your hard drive.
  2. Open the Applications folder.
  3. Open the Utilities folder.
  4. Open the Java folder.
  5. Verify the presence of Java 1.3.1 Plugin Settings and Java 1.4.2 Plugin Settings.
